Excerpt

Sport, in its myriad variations and ever-changing contexts, has existed as a constant of human culture for about as long as the human construct of community. It has played a humble role in the creation of a common unity—often providing a touchstone for seemingly incompatible persons to find agreement and provide a target for their social unity or a place to dream.
